Difference betwen prostitution and pornography

Here is a very well written article that explores the difference between prostitution and pornography, and asks why one is legal and the other is not.

Consider again the significance of the sexual act: legal consequences can follow from it and it can, accordingly, be regulated by the law in a variety of ways. Though two people may very much want to have sex with each other in private, the law can intervene to say that they cannot, just because one of them seeks money and the other gratification, for example.

If, however, both members of the couple are in it for the money, and there is a man with a camera taping them, then the sex is insulated by the Constitution from legal regulation.

It isn't that hard to

It isn't that hard to distinguish prostitution from pornography. Some of my friends know people who are London escorts, and they don't do it because they want to do it. They have to survive and feed their children. Porn is another way of making money by having sex. Instead of having sex with a random person, it's with another actor who is getting the same benefit as you. So, porn should not be illegal. Prostitution on the other hand, should be. It's dangerous out there. There are a lot of diseases.

I disagree. I think

I disagree. I think Pornography and Prostitution go hand in hand. Sherry Colb's article really hits the nail on the head. The only reason Porn is legal is because it is considered protected speech, under the Supreme Court's First Amendment precedents. Which is ridiculous because Porn is sex for money just as Prostitution is sex for money. Actors are paid by the producer of the film just as Prostitutes are paid by their clients. The only difference is Porn is filmed and distributed to an audience that enjoys watching it instead of participating in it, therefor it is protected speech.

Legally they should both fall under the same category. Whether it be for the enjoyment of the consumers of Porn or for the physical enjoyment of a client it's still sex for money!

I personally think Prostitution should be legalized. At least in a way that protects the rights of prostitutes that are doing it illegally anyway. It seems crazy to me that, because there is no safer alternative, we are forcing Prostitutes onto the streets where they are more vulnerable to exploitation and Sexually transmitted diseases, rather than making sex work a safer place for one to earn a living.
