The feelings are so real that it leads me to believe that a dream must take place in an alternate physical reality of sorts, since the imagination alone cannot be responsible for generating complex laws of physics as well as making up and experiencing the bizarre story lines that unfold in dream-space.
Last night I dreamt that ever since I started listening to Alfred Brendel's excellent recording of the Schubert Moments Musicaux for piano, I had developed the ability to hear one of them in particular in the real pitches. So certain and unfailing was this ability that it was effectively the late onset of perfect pitch, since I could always refer to my memory of the Schubert to identify tones and pitches. Furthermore, the memory of this particular piece (Op. 94 No.3 in F Minor) was so strong that if I attempted to sing along with it, I was at risk of singing out of tune and experiencing the wah-wah-wah waves that result when two instruments are not well tuned with each other. So in my dream, I was not only hearing a Schubert piano piece so vividly that I knew all the names of the pitches, I even dreamt that I was singing along and creating unpleasant sound wave patterns. I had the experience of being out of tune with my memory of the piece.
